In 1948, when Dad graduated high school, he and my grandparents built a dairy barn and started milking cows. Prior to that, they raised acres and acres of tomatoes. The first milk that left the farm was in milk cans that were transported to a loading dock of the Ma & Pa Railroad, ultimately to be transported to the dairy plant in Baltimore. Fast forward 68 years and 6 generations and we are still in the business. We have 200 head of of dairy and beef cattle and farm 200 acres of crops. The home farm is located on Forge Hill Road, which he purchased in 1987. This is where most of the vegetables are grown. He raises the balance of the produce at Wilson’s Farm Market on Waverly Drive. The goal is to connect the community to how their food is produced and see and learn first hand. Highland Heights Farm was founded in 1924 by Calvin Galbreath who excelled in the swine industry and his son, William Galbreath, who later followed in his footsteps. In the 1980s, brothers Allen and Stewart Galbreath led the farm’s next generation switching the primary focus to dairy cattle. The dairy farm steadily grew throughout the subsequent decades with the herd peaking at over 300 cows. In 2004, Allen and his wife Kim worked together to start Hawks Hill Creamery in an effort to provide quality local agricultural products and avoid dependence upon fluctuating milk prices. The stone house was built in 1841 by Lee Magness and since 1924 the property has been continuously under the Magness name. The log cabin, where the quilt is hung, was originally the Union Chapel Church located at Old Joppa and Mountain Roads. In 1948 the Cabin was being torn down to make way for the new church. As the story goes, the Magness family traded firewood for the remaining church structure and rebuilt it at Duncale Farm. John and Theresa Magness along with sons Parker and Jacob currently operate the farm, raising beef cattle, various grains, hay and produce.
